Whom the Gods wish to destroy

Manila Standard Today

The emergence of new political power blocks is noticeable as a result of the automated elections.

There are the Marcoses with Bongbong Marcos landing No. 7 among the senatorial winners, outpacing even well-known re-electionists and returning senators. With the election of former First Lady Imelda Marcos to Congress, and with Imee Marcos as governor of Ilocos Norte, there’s no doubt that Ilocandia is still a solid bloc to contend with. My gulay, would you believe that even in Cagayan province, Bongbong was No. 1?

Together with the Romualdezes of Leyte, like re-electionist Rep. Martin Romualdez, the Marcoses and the Romualdezes are a power to watch. Note that another son of Kokoy Romualdez—Philip, president of Chamber of Mines, is married to the Inquirer president, Sandy Prieto.

Another bloc to contend with is the Binay bloc with Makati Mayor Jojo Binay as the next vice president, who is likely to be the next Department of the Interior and Local Government secretary. With Makati City still held by the Binays, Jojo is somebody to contend with in 2016.

A future presidential contender —Senator Chiz Escudero—cannot be too complacent with his presidential aspirations with Bongbong and Jojo Binay in contention. As they say, politics is the art of the possible!
