Malacanang insists there was nothing wrong with these appointments by claiming these were issued before the appointment ban on March l0, or two months prior to the May elections.
But there were suspicions that most of the questionable appointments were antedated. Incoming President Benigno Aquino III said all these appointments would be scrutinized upon his assumption to office and they would be revoked if there are grounds to believe they were made in circumvention of the appointment ban.
As many as 250 midnight appointments were allegedly signed by Mrs. Arroyo, sources in the Aquino camp said. The outgoing president appointed l69 people from March l to 9 alone to positions in government-owned and controlled corporations and in l0 other government agencies, including the Office of the President.
